Why Study Political Science?

Political Science is the study of how individuals and groups exercise power and influence, or resist power and influence being exercised over them. It deals with an enormous range of phenomena, from how individuals formulate their self-identity to how nations become involved in war.

The study of politics is a crucial part of any liberal education, linking readily with history, philosophy, sociology and anthropology, psychology, criminology, social theory and literary studies. The program concentrates on providing practical experience and teaching the range of skills and theoretical approaches adopted in political analysis.

Pass Degree

Taking a first-year Political Science subject opens the possibility of a three-year pass degree. In first year students are introduced to political science concepts in subjects. In second and third year, a greater range of single semester-length subjects are offered. A full listing of Political Science subjects is available in the University Handbook.

Honours Degree

At the end of the third year, students who have demonstrated the ability and enthusiasm to pursue more intensive, original research are invited to join the Honours year. A major component of the honours year is the completion of a research project or thesis. An Honours degree also opens the way to post-graduate study.
