Scholarships and grants for postgraduates

Grants for travel and fieldwork

Grants are available from numerous sources on and off campus to help postgraduates meet the costs associated with their research. The most common grants are listed below, but other 'one-off' grants become available from time to time. Stay in touch through the Department's and the Graduate Centre's email lists for the latest information on upcoming grant offers, and check with the Melbourne Scholarships Office for other potential sources of funding from organisations outside the University.

Important note: all students undertaking research-related work off campus are required to undertake a risk assessment. Risk assessment is now required for grant applications.

Departmental Fieldwork Fund
This is the Department's own fund for supporting research-only higher degree students who wish to travel within Australia or overseas to access key source material not available locally, conduct surveys or other research projects, or participate in conferences.

Faculty of Arts TRIPS Scheme
The scheme offers assistance with the following accommodation and/or travel costs of PhD students, or MA students presenting conference papers, in the Faculty of Arts.

Melbourne Abroad Travelling Scholarships
For PhD students travelling overseas.

Postgraduate Overseas Research Scholarships
For PhD students to gain international experience.

Scholarships for paying stipends

Local students
The Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) are the most common stipend paying scholarships available to research postgraduates at the University, and are applied for on a joint form. Applications close on 31 October each year, for commencement the following year.

Postgraduate Equity Scholarships (PES) are available to provide support for students of Indigeous Australian descent, disabilities, whose academic career has been adversely affected and those studying in the field of human rights.

International students
International students can apply for scholarships on their admission application form. This includes the Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) which pays a living stipend, and the Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) which meets the full cost of tuition fees.

Funding for tuition fees

Local students
All PhD and research Masters students who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents have their study funded through the Research Training Scheme.

Some HECS places may be available for coursework postgraduates, but most will be offered admission on a fee-paying basis. The Faculty of Arts expects to provide a part-fee remission to all newly enrolling Australian students. Coursework students can apply for a loan to fund their study, through the PELS scheme. International students
All international applications are automatically assessed for tuition scholarships. For more information about fees and PELS please refer to the Faculty of Arts.

Other Scholarships

The Darmasiswa Program

The Darmasiswa program aims to foster interest in Indonesia’s language, culture and arts among friendly nations. The program first began in 1974, and was initially only for students from ASEAN countries. In 1976, the program was expanded and students from other countries such as Hungary, Norway, Mexico, Sweden, Canada, France, Australia and the USA were encouraged to apply.

Darmasiswa is a one- (short course) or two- (regular course) semester scholarship offered by the Indonesian government to foreign students willing to study language or arts in an Indonesian university. The scholarship covers living allowance, tuition fee and limited medical insurance. For students coming from Vietnam, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Laos the scholarship may cover the airfares. More than 150 students from many different countries study in Indonesian universities under Darmasiswa scholarship each year. The application form is available at the Indonesian Embassy in every country in the world.

The Darmasiswa Scholarships are funded by the Indonesian government, and several are offered annually to Australians wishing to undertake one year, non degree programs at a tertiary level in Indonesia. Applications must be received by the Education and Cultural Section by the end of November, and are then sent to Jakarta for consideration. Successful applicants are notified mid year, and travel to Indonesia to commence their studies in August/September.

Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be Australian Citizens, aged 35 years or less.
  2. Applicants must have completed Year 12, or equivalent.
  3. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of the proposed field of study.
  4. Applications must be received no later than 30th November.

Fields of study:

  • Indonesian language and literature
  • Regional language and literature (for example, Balinese, Sundanese, Javanese and so forth).
  • Indonesian music, arts or dance.

Scholarship Allowance:
Participants will receive a monthly allowance of Rp. 350,000, with a one-off clothing allowance of 75,000. University/institution tuition fees are also covered, as are many of the fees pertaining to immigration and visa services.

The Inaugural Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship

The $5,000 scholarship is intended to support historical fieldwork in any Australian Indigenous community. Postgraduate students and scholars recently awarded PhDs are invited to apply.

The closing date for submissions is 22 August 2008

Grants are to support research on the causes, correction and prevention of criminal behaviour, and related matters. Criteria used to assess the policy relevance of submissions for funding include their: contribution to knowledge of crime trends which could be used for planning and resource allocation by government agencies;

  • examination of an under-researched topic
  • relevance to a current or emerging serious criminal justice issue
  • benefit in developing new policies or procedures for dealing with the crime problem in question
  • benefit in devising crime reduction strategies
  • assistance in developing police policies or practices
  • benefit in devising legislative reform proposals
  • support and assistance in the development of existing work by government agencies
  • ability to inform training activities for criminal justice personnel
  • assistance to victim support activities or services
  • assistance in offender support activities or services
  • contribution to statistical data holdings.
