Contributions are sought which specifically retain an ethical commitment both to Deleuze as a scholar, and to those material social, political and community concerns that inform social theory and Deleuzian scholarship in considered, original ways. Symposium on The European Far Right: Pathology and Prospects Friday, 6 August at the National Europe Centre, 1 Liversidge Street, Australian National University. This symposium will analyse the virus of far right extremism, which has proliferated in Europe and Australia, in recent years. It will analyse the notion of right wing extremism, explain the origins of the contemporary ultra-right syndrome and assess its impact on mainstream political discourse. Sessions will concentrate on the distinctive social, political, cultural, and cyber communications developments, which are spawning and shaping contemporary far right parties, movements and groupuscules. The final session will be devoted to discussing the far right in Australia over the last decade. Speakers include: * Professor Cas Mudde of the School of Political Science, Criminology & Sociology, University of Antwerp, who is Chairman of the Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy of the European Consortium on Political Research. His most recent (co-edited) publication is Western democracies and the new extreme right challenge (London: Routledge, 2004). * Martin Schain, Professor of Politics and Director of the Center for European Studies at New York University since 1993. He recently co-edited: Shadows over Europe: The Development and Impact of the Extreme Right in Western Europe (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2002). * Dr Michael Bruter, a Visiting Fellow at the National Europe Centre from the Department of Government at the London School of Economics, who has been researching the growth of a European identity in the wake of the expansion of the European Community. The topic of his paper will be Identity and Extreme Right Discourse. * Dr Giorel Curran, of Griffith University, who will compare the political mainstreaming of far right discourse in John Howards Australia and Silvio Berlusconis Italy. Dr Curran will draw on an article, which she has just published in the latest issue of the London journal Patterns of Prejudice.
