Postgraduate Equity 'Human Rights' Scholarship Applications are invited for the Postgraduate Equity Scholarship (PES). This scholarship can be awarded to either local or international students: * with a demonstrated commitment to peacefully advancing respect for human rights; * and who are currently enrolled in, or plan to commence, postgraduate study or research at the University in the Human Rights field. Applications for the PES 'Human Rights' category must be lodged with the Melbourne Scholarships Office by close of business 1 December 2003. Challenging the notions of identity, gender and the nation-state Dr Millsom Henry-Waring (Sociology Programme, The University of Melbourne) 11 November, 1:00-2:00pm Room 212, Level 2, 234 Queensberry St Dr Henry-Waring joined the Melbourne Political Science department in 2003. She completed her Ph.D at Monash in 2002 on Moving Beyond Otherness: (Re)vealing, (Re)inscribing and (Re)centring the Polyvocal Subjectivities of Black British Women across the UK. Thesis Eleven Centre Symposium: Eastern Europe, Intellectuals and the Social Sciences Wednesday 26th November 2003 10 am ö 5 pm Institute of Advanced Studies (Main Seminar Room) This day long symposium will begin with a paper by Ivan Szelenyi, on ãPatterns of Exclusion ö Social History of a Roma Community, 1857-2000ä The paper offers a historical demography and ethnography of the changing social position of Roma population within a peasant community, shifting from the position of lower class to undercaste and to underclass. The paper is a micro-historical contribution to a historical and comparative theory of the underclass. Ivan Szelenyi is William Graham Sumner Professor of Sociology at Yale University, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and regular member of the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences. Ivan left Hungary on a one way exit visa, which took him via Kent to Flinders University. He helped to bring the Budapest School to Australia from 1978. He has since worked at CUNY, UCLA, and Madison, and is rebuilding the Yale Sociology Department. We will celebrate his work and his contribution in discussion with Hugh Stretton, Maria Markus, Bill Martin, Johann Arnason and others.
